Knightsbridge has long been considered London’s key retail district for London’s wealthiest residents, as well as a destination for shoppers from all over the world – a fact recognised by the London Plan, which designated the area as one of London’s two international retail centres, the other being within the West End.
At its epicentre lies Europe’s biggest department store, which is Harrods. The store was founded in 1849 and covers 1.1 million square feet. It’s that large it has its own postcode: SW1X 7XL. To the east is the older Harvey Nichols, which opened its flagship store’s doors in 1831.
Knightsbridge is just south of Hyde Park, skirting London’s largest green space and making for a picturesque scene, while a generous offering of pubs, restaurants and bars are littered across both sides of Brompton Road, the main thoroughfare in the district.
There is currently 192,000 sq ft of available space to let in Knightsbridge, which equates to a vacancy rate of 5.5%

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Knightsbridge has become home to many exclusive retailers such as Tommy Hilfiger, housing their UK HQ within the area. It’s also home to one of the world’s best-known marketing and communications brand, J Walter Thompson, whose head office is on 1 Knightsbridge Green.

Harrods may be the beating heart of Knightsbridge to many, but the district is home to some of London’s finest museums including the V&A, Science Museum and the Natural History Museum (which technically is the Kensington and Chelsea side of Exhibition Road). What’s more, its upper boundary skirts along a majority of Hyde Park – perfect for lunch-time running or simply a stroll.
As you’d expect, in one of London’s most expensive neighborhoods you can find the gastronomic experiences to match, many being vehicles for the UK’s biggest celebrity chefs. Fine-dining restaurants include Dinner by Heston Blumenthal and Marcus Waring’s eponymous Marcus at The Berkeley, while other upscale options including Mari Vanna, Mr Chow and Amesta with Arzak Instruction.
And although these options may be prohibitively expensive on a day-to-day basis, many of Knightsbridge’s best eateries and bars lay-on lunch-time menus that are far more accommodating price-wise – check the swanky Bar Boulud, which offers a three-course set lunch with a glass of wine for £24, or 190 Queen’s Gate, which does a three-course set lunch for less than 20 quid.
On the drink’s front, you would be forgiven for thinking Knightsbridge’s watering holes are reserved exclusively for the well-heeled, but many of the back streets off Brompton Road are perfect for escaping the bustle of the high street and nipping into for a crafty pint or vino – Tattersall Tavern, Paxtons Head and The Bunch of Grapes are all recommended.
